What is the best tide time to see black bears feeding on Clayoquot Sound beaches?
What is the best tide time to see black bears feeding on Clayoquot Sound beaches?
The best time to see black bears is strictly during low tide. As the water level drops, it exposes vast, rocky intertidal zones packed with rock crabs, clams, and barnacles—the primary food source for local black bears. Our tour schedules change daily because they are meticulously timed to align with these shifting low-tide cycles. Booking a tour optimized for the daily low tide ensures the highest probability of seeing multiple bear families stepping out from the dense rainforest canopy down onto the rocky shores to forage.
What camera lenses or photography gear do I need for a coastal bear watching tour?
What camera lenses or photography gear do I need for a coastal bear watching tour?
Because we maintain a respectful distance from the shoreline, a smartphone lens will struggle to capture tight details. For the best wildlife shots, we highly recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera equipped with a telephoto zoom lens (ideally in the 70-300mm or 100-400mm range). Since you will be shooting from a floating, gently moving boat, leave your tripod behind as it will absorb the boat's vibration. Instead, rely on a fast shutter speed and your lens's built-in image stabilization to capture crisp, sharp photos of the bears against the dark forest background.
Do passengers get off the boat on Tofino bear watching tours?
Do passengers get off the boat on Tofino bear watching tours?
No, for safety reasons and strict wildlife conservation ethics, guests never step off the boat onto the shore. All coastal bear viewing is done entirely from the safety of our vessels as we idle just a short distance from the shoreline. Black bears are completely focused on overturning heavy rocks to look for crabs and beach barnacles, meaning they are accustomed to the quiet presence of boats. This boat-based viewing format keeps both you and the bears completely safe, allowing you to witness natural foraging behaviors without disrupting the animals or entering their physical territory.
